Professor Yao received his Bachelor's degree from the Department of Thermal Engineering, Tsinghua University in 1983; followed by a Master's degree from the same department in 1986; he started his career in 1986 at the Department of Energy Engineering, Zhejiang University, serving consecutively as teaching assistant, lecturer, deputy director of the Coal-Water Slurry Research Center at the Institute of Thermal Power Engineering, associate professor, deputy director of the Institute of Thermal Power Engineering, professor. He earned his doctoral degree from the Department of Energy Engineering at Zhejiang University in 1992. In 1999, he returned to Tsinghua University as a professor in the Department of Thermal Engineering. In 2000, he was appointed the director of the National Engineering Research Center for Clean Combustion of Coal at Tsinghua University. He became head of the Department of Thermal Engineering at Tsinghua University in 2002, and in July 2014, he was appointed Secretary of the Party Committee of the same department. In 2015, he assumed the roles of the Vice Provost of Tsinghua University and the Dean of the Graduate School at Tsinghua University. In 2019, he was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Xinjiang University and in 2020, he became President of Xinjiang University. His main research area includes combustion theory and technology, as well as clean energy science and technology.
